European-wide transport logistics expertise from seafood to sea-creatures
For over 30 years, McLanachan Transport has been a key logistics partner across a wide range of sectors. Back in 2005, we were approached to provide a live animal transport. You may immediately think nothing too unusual about that, although when we tell you the live animal was a shark, you’ll understand why this case study is more unusual than most.
The Customer - Sealife Centre
Sealife is part of the Merlin Entertainment Group, which has theme parks and attractions around the world. Sealife Centres provide a fantastic way for families to discover more about the sea creatures which inhabit the waters around the UK. A significant focus of their work is education and conservation, with all the Sealife Centres involved in rescue and breeding of endangered species.
The Challenges - Shark Relocation
McLanachan Transport was contacted by another industry-leading transport logistics company who felt they did not have the right experience for this particular project. As part of a breeding programme, the Sealife Centre in Scarborough wanted to move a two-metre shark from Scarborough to their centre in North Queensferry, across the Firth of Forth from Edinburgh.
Although we had never moved any live animals before, there was no reason why it would not be possible. Our logistics team visited both locations to assess the feasibility of operation, and to ensure both parties were confident the project was achievable and safe for the animal.
The Solution - Safe AND Stress-free
There were some crucial factors for the shark’s transportation; keeping the tank at a constant temperature, also its fixings needed to be secure so it would not move unduly and cause any stress for the shark.
Our dual temperature-controlled trailer units are the perfect solution for such an unusual transport, as the ambient temperature range is very flexible and continuously monitored throughout the journey.
A vet was on-board the vehicle for the whole journey, which included six scheduled stops to allow the vet to check for any signs of stress. We completed the entire operation from loading to unloading without any issues or incidents, and we are happy to report the shark was able to fulfil the role in the breeding programme.
